The Boneyard Project: Return Trip (Pima Air Museum, Tucson)

Richard, Chris, and I drove to the  south end of Tucson to see the painted nose cones and aircraft-as-canvas. I’m posting a few photos. Better images and history of the project are at www.ericfirestonegallery.com. Cathy Cowgirl, done in bubble gum pink and outlined in coloring book black, offended some visitors. You’ll have to look behind a privacy curtain to see CC. The exhibit will be at the museum until May 31, 2012. The museum is a must-see for history (WWII) and aircraft.

Stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner at Poco & Mom’s Restaurant, a New Mexican find with delicious food, mild salsa, and a huge basket of chips on each table. The servers are helpful and friendly. Chris and I split a chili rellenos lunch. The thick white cheese infused into a Hatch chili grabbed on to one of my coronary arteries. (Yum! So delicious.)  With the last bite of pork stew, Richard exhaled a satisfied oink.    www.pocoandmoms.com/ 1060 S. Kolb Road.

Grammar Hammer

                                                       Grammar Hammer

Grammatical errors – what annoys you most? What errors would you like to nail with the grammar hammer? I’d like to hear from you. Here are my favorites.

Who or That which is it?     Who refers to people (singular or plural).  That refers to objects, animals, or groups, such as a team or a committee.

Do not say/write: The man that fed the pigeons ate some of the seeds.

Fewer or Less    Fewer – countable items, used with plural nouns.

(Fewer cars ..)

Less – degree or amount, used with singular nouns. (Less sugar . . .)

Do not write/say: The woman put less items in the shopping cart.

Professor Goldin gave his Rutgers English students the Goldin Rule: Do not begin a sentence with This.  No one knows what a This is.  I’m also taking the grammar hammer to sentences beginning with There is and There are!

There are five bedbugs asleep on the pillow.    Alternative: Five bedbugs fell asleep on the pillow.

There is a man juggling oranges in Union Square.  Alternative: A man juggling oranges . . . .)

Hammer these:    . . . . had went     Drive slow!     Where is he at?      Where did she go to?

New England Clam Chowder

I designated myself  a clam chowder critic during last week’s trip to Boston and Provincetown.  Here’s what I discovered:  Clam chowder has many variations. Thick with white paste and a few clam sprinkles does not make for a pleasant first course.

Seaglass restaurant in Salisbury: thick, served well-heated, diced potatoes, and horribly thick. Legal Seafood: Okay but thick. Bubabla’s: Too thick, minced micro-clams. [Steamers were great!]. The winner: Cafe Heaven in Provincetown.

The best, best clam chowder to my liking was at a church yard sale on Block Island, 2010. The recipe was non-dairy. Only clams, diced potatoes, a little onion, herbs/spices, clam juice and water. The taste was divine.
